Questioning one’s beliefs about spirituality can occur at any stage of life, whether caused by a particular incident or by accumulated experience. Coaching can help with clarifying the big questions around why we are here and what is happening in our interior world.
Some acute causes for a spiritual crisis include such events as an emotional or physical trauma, a mystical vision, a paranormal experience, the death of a loved one, or a near-death experience. However, it can also come on more slowly, with a dawning realization that an old paradigm of spirituality is no longer working. When a paradigm erodes, confusion and disillusionment often follow. But with the passing away of the old paradigm, a kind of awakening can occur. The movement toward a greater meaning and connection beyond personal identity is sometimes called “spiritual emergence”.
Legendary historical figures such as Saint Teresa of Avila, Mahatma Gandhi, and Viktor Frankl experienced such crises in very different circumstances, and have written beautiful accounts of their transformations; I highly recommend exploring their stories. An excellent more recent account is the book UFO of God (2023) by Chris Bledsoe. Mr. Bledsoe found his Christian faith shaken, and eventually significantly changed, by encounters with various anomalous phenomena (not just UFOs). His ongoing experiences continue to be validated by many witnesses, making it an especially valuable account for modern times.
Sometimes it is necessary to get a new perspective, outside of the institutions that we have grown up with.
